Regrettably we announce the passing of Gordy Kjer on Saturday October 3rd

Gordy Kjer passed away Saturday, October 3, 2009, at age 87 after a battle with cancer. Gordy was a member of this organization since 1987 and had served as Treasurer from 1993 to 97, Secretary in 1998, and Vice-President in 2002. He also served for several years as the newsletter editor. He built many fine models but his best one (IMHO) was the Billings African Queen where he had accurate figures of Charlie and Rosie in correct clothing. As his health started to catch up with him he got more into RTR fast electric boats.

September 13th

WSBA Trophy Regatta

The trophy regatta was cancelled due to only six members showing up at the park.

September 10th meeting

Sandy from the Boy Scouts stopped by to brief us on the setup for the Oshkosh Jamboree on Sept. 26th. An extensive discussion took place on the running issues which came up at The Domes and Kohler this summer. It was decided that the etiquette guidelines should be enforced better and there should be some guidelines for allowing spectators to run models, especially fast boats. The use of the frequency board and frequency flags will be more stringently enforced.

August 22nd

5th Annual Pewaukee Antique & Classic Boat Show & Art Fair

Hosted by the Glacier Lakes Chapter, Antique and Classic Boat Society. Located at Lakefront Park

Village of Pewaukee, Pewaukee, WI.

The event had decent weather and substantial crowds. We were unable to run due to the weeds in Pewaukee Lake. We have been invited back next year with a promise of a weed free area to run in.

July 18th

Shops at Woodlake in Kohler, WI

On Saturday July 18th the club was at the Shops at Woodlake in Kohler. WI. A little background on the event. Several years ago (1995) one of our members took his sailboat along when his wife wanted to go the Shops at Woodlake. He sailed while she shopped. This resulted in the management inviting the club to participate in their summer sidewalk sale every July. We have attended every year since. They have live music and the United Church of Christ has a pie sale too. During the summer the Sheboygan Footy sail boaters run on the lake. this year it was a tad cool and cloudy but that is better than baking, drowning, or freezing. I'd like to give the Shops at Woodlake and Paula a public thank you for inviting us back each year.

June 21st

Father's Day at the Domes

The club was invited to take part in a special day at the Domes in honor of dear old Dad. We operated in the reflecting pools that flank the entrance. Food and music were provided inside the Domes for Dad and those showing him that he is someone special. Our thanks to Peter Lepkowski and the staff at The Domes for having us along for the day.

Recap of 33rd Annual Midwestern Model Ships & Boats Contest and Display

The Wisconsin Maritime Museum

Manitowoc, WI
Friday-Sunday, MAY 15-17 , 2009

Again this year the club exhibited in conjunction with the model ship contest held by WMM. This year we had four members enter the contest, Chuck Lewis with a new steam launch, Tom Thelen with his Chris Craft runabout, Terry Bruce with his Grand Banks, and Joe Frischmann with his static carrier USS Enterprise.

The results for our members:

Terry Bruce won  a gold award in the intermediate class (scratch built),

Tom Thelen won a gold award for the novice class (operational),

and Chuck Lewis won a silver award for the advanced class (operational).

Congratulations guys.

Outside Saturday it was windy and cool. Two of Joe Dembiec's boats decided to take wing and discovered they weren't airplanes. Some minor damage was sustained.

2009 Milwaukee Boat Show display a success.

The club just completed a 10 day run at the Milwaukee Boat Show presented by the Milwaukee Marine Dealers Association and Showspan. The show was a bit scaled back this year due to the current economy. Less flashy boats were the mainstay of the show and quality and value were emphasized. Most dealers were pleased with the crowd turnout and by the end of the show there were sold tags appearing on the displayed boats. The club and other exhibitors who were in the outer halls in previous years were moved inside the main hall. More people saw us and it was much warmer being away from the windows. The Coast Guard Auxiliary has gone R/C with a boat they call "Coastie". It has many working features controlled by R/C and was a big hit with kids. Coastie runs on the floor on wheels.
